If you are still interested in taking the spring plunge into the mighty Peshtigo River with Urban WhiteWater Pirates,

You will want to meet at the rafting facility at about 10:45 for
the 11:30 trip to get fitted for wetsuits and wetboots.

Please let them know also if your interested in a second trip at 2pm.

Most liklely I will be taking the second trip as long is weather is fair to excellent.

If you ARE NOT interested in rafting...feel free to join us on Saturday evening for some karaoke/DJ at the bar.

Many places still have cabins for rent if you wish to stay the night.

WHAT THORNTONS SUPPLY
The cost of these guided spring trips is about $45.00 and includes "Farmer John" style wetsuits, helmets, and life jackets. We run these guided trips in four, six and eight person rafts, and provide transportation to the river and return trip to our resort. Our resort and campgrounds provide large, clean showers so you can revitalize yourself before a night of fun and entertainment at our large bar. Efficiency is the goal we strive for, leaving and returning on time, so there is little waiting around and you can get the most out of your adventure. Class 3, 4, and 5 rapids

WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING

The weather is very unpredictable and the water is cold during our spring season. Our trips are run rain or shine, and to assure you of a memorable and enjoyable experience, here are some very important things to bring.
A windbreaker

Wool or synthetic sweater

Tennis shoes with heavy socks

A change of dry clothes

White-water rafting is definitely a team effort--that's why understanding the basics of paddling are so important. If everyone in the raft gives it their all, it's much easier to guide the raft down the river and through the rapids.

Once you're in the raft, sit facing downriver with your back to the bow -back of the raft-. Hold the paddle with your inside hand -the hand farthest away from the paddle- on top and your outside hand, knuckles facing out, gripping the paddle low on the stern. Lean forward from your hips, straighten your arms out in front of you, and keep your back straight. Straighten your wrists and put the paddle into the water—make sure the blade is completely under the surface of the water. Straighten your top arm while pulling back the paddle with your lower arm guiding the paddle. Reverse this motion to back paddle. If you want to turn the raft right, the right side of your rafting team needs to paddle backward while the left side paddles forward. The same goes for turning left except the members on the left side of the raft need to paddle backward and the right side forward.
Rafting is all about communicating and working as a team!

To find out how much water is flowing in a stream or river, USGS personnel have to go out and make a "discharge measurement." USGS uses the term "discharge" to refer to how much water is flowing, and discharge is usually expressed in "cubic feet per second" (think of a cube of water one foot on a side, and how many of those move past a point in one second). To do this, we often have to go out and stand in the creek, measure the depth and how fast the water is moving at many places across the creek. By doing this many, many times, and at many stream stages, over the years we can develop a relation between stream stage and discharge. Stream stages are not always cooperative, so its not uncommon for someone to have to go measure a stream at 2:00 in the morning during a storm, sometimes in freezing conditions! Also, the stream can be uncooperative in that it changes -- a big storm may come along and scour out bottom material of a creek, or lodge a big log sideways in the creek, or sometimes do both at the same time. These kind of changes result in changes in the relation between stage and discharge.
